If you haven't read Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, do yourself a favor and read it. It is prophetic in its detailing of what can happen when a government meddles in the free market.
Also, Basic Economics: A Citizen's Guide to the Economy by Thomas Sowell is a great read and a good weapon against the misinformation so prevalent in news stories about the economy.
